20 Years of Star Trek: Voyager - S01xE02

Ensign Lestat's TV Log, 04/07/15

Parallax
Not so long ago, I tried re-watching the show from scratch, in chronological order. For whatever reason, that didn't pan out. So here's hoping this time it works out.

Poor Carey's nose. Ouch, that looks serious Carey. So far, we don't know who assaulted him.

Oh dear. Formal charges against B'Elanna for assault.

Chakotay is trying to support Torres. Tuvok is arguing for Starfleet regulations.

Can't be easy for Tuvok to take orders from a Maquis.

Two Maquis crewmembers are suggesting mutiny.

Whoa, B'Elanna is like a beast on the prowl.

'Lieutenant Carey is an idiot!' She's heartless. Poor Chakotay is between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Never got why B'Elanna pronounced Chakotay's name differently in the beginning.

B as Chief of Engineering? Chakotay hasn't run this by the Captain, should he have told B'Elanna his plan to promote her over Carey?

Captain sounds a bit nasally. Her hair-dye has calmed down.

Senior Officers meeting. Ship's in a bad way.

Kes and Neelix just gate-crashed. Tom has chivalrously given his seat to Kes.

Kes is amazingly enterprising. She's come up with an awesome idea. The exact opposite of how I am in meetings.

Chakotay has a list of Maquis officers to fill the Starfleet roles. J is shocked by his suggestion that B take over Engineering.

Tom has been 'volunteered' to become a field medic?! I love that the hot dude is asked to be a medic. They unfortunately don't use that for a while.

The ship has come across a type 4 quantum singularity? And an audio transmission coming through? Wait, there's a ship in there. I've always loved these kind of episodes. As always, we need a Smurfette, Kes has been nominated, she doesn't know what an Event Horizon is.

Chakotay just asked Torres' advice without consulting the Captain. Now J's asserting her authority by giving Carey the lead. Wipe that smirk off your face Carey.

Uh oh. Cap's mad.

'This isn't about Torres.'

Cap and C having an argument over principles.

Permission to speak freely. Captain almost always allows it.

They're fighting over Torres.

A thinly veiled allegory about the needs and recognition of minorities. Not for nothing Beltran is playing a character who has to protect 'his people'.

Geez, the Doc is so grumpy.

'How much dirt do you need?' Doc, you're so funny.

Doc, you have no sensitivity, you're just sensitive.

Doc, you shrank! Something's wrong with the ship.

Uck. Kim so abruptly cut the Doc off.

'What's your name?' Kes opens up a can of worms here. It'll be an important part of the Doctor's arc.

Engaging tractor beam on the ship in the Event Horizon. Bad idea, they're being pulled into the singularity.

When in doubt, shake the camera and the set.

Looks like Voyager is heading to get help from some aliens.

B is in the Captain's readyroom.

B is being catty with J, but Cap's unflinching.

B'Elanna would never make it through a regular interview. She's too aggressive. She had a turbulent couple of years at Starfleet.

Damn, she really doesn't like Starfleet.

Everyone forgot about the Doc. He's shrunk more.

Ha - Voyager is sometimes too real. Communication gap, and the Doc is pissed he's been left out of the loop. Typical office environment.

Oh dear, Voyager just went round in a circle and are facing the same singularity.

We're trying to verify that we're moving away from the singularity. Uh oh, despite it all the singularity is in front of us again.

Don't push it, Chakotay. But Cap's nice enough to accept B at the staff meeting as well.

Uff, Carey and B'Elanna do not get along.

Harry is looking for gossip? Funny lad.

Oh dear, Harry's not feeling well.

Doc is looking so weird. He's such a sarcastic person.

B'Elanna looks the way I do in a meeting - zoned out. However, unlike me, she has ideas. It's cool how B cuts Carey short.

B and J talk science. Cap gives Chakotay the 'she's all right' look.

They're trying to clear up the audio message. But wait, it's the hail from Voyager.

What? The other ship was Voyager!

B'Elanna's on a roll here. She's got ideas and explanations at the ready.

Oh wow, Voyager has been stuck in the singularity since the beginning. They responded to a 'distress call' that was actually the hail. Tom looks super-cute when he's confused.

Quantum physics suggests that effect precedes cause? Ok, if you say so Captain.

B and J are talking science again. Lovely to see the two of them so excited about being close to a solution.

Warp particles being blasted. They've found the rupture in the singularity but it's too small.

Tom is way too excited about anything to do with flying. He's using his best flirty voice to convince Cap to take him on the away mission.

B and J are together in the shuttle. B knows herself really well. But she doesn't give herself any credit.

Camera is shaking again. Shuttle is on its way back to Voyager. But the comms system has been damaged.

Wait, Tom has only two meters on either side to get the ship out.

There are two Voyagers. Port or Starboard? B and J can't seem to agree. Which one's the reflection?

'If you're wrong, we're going to have a long time to debate it,' mighty scary words there from B.

Shuttle is docking.

Cutting thrusters.

Ooo. Solid ground.

Come on, Paris. Punch your way through. We're losing power.

Yes, we're through! I have proper goosebumps all over. This show is insane.

There used to be an ad about upcoming TV shows, which used a lot of Tom's footage. Love that guy.

B'Elanna's the Chief of Engineering. She just said 'please' to her staff.

She also knows how to keep her enemies close. She's asking Carey to help her out with Starfleet protocols.

'I assure you, you'll never get less than my best.' And Carey shakes her hand. This is one of the most significant moments in the first season. It establishes Carey as a generally nice guy, and that this ship and this time isn't necessarily about gender and background. He could have made a scene or at the very least, a catty comment to bring her down a peg, but they make it professional. This is how things would turn out in an office.

B's going to have a tough time. People have already asked to be reassigned or have complained.

Would the Captain have served under Chakotay if Voyager had been destroyed? A very personal question, Chakotay. I'm glad the writers didn't have Janeway answer it. Logically, there's no way the Maquis ship could have accommodated the entire crew.

Oh no! The poor Doc! He's so tiny. Tom is being a mean beast.

I love time travel episodes and time reflections are the best. This episode, however, was essentially a platform to allow B'Elanna and the Captain to meet on common ground and establish the order of the crew. I love that B'Elanna's many problems were solely attributed to her lack of training and rebellious temperament. Not once was her gender brought up, and that to me, is a big deal. When I saw this episode over a decade ago, none of that occurred to me. But because in today's world, a character's gender plays a significant role in the character's journey, irrespective of the episode story or the character's arc, this currently makes for a huge subversion of the norm.

Up next, one of my all time favourites.
