Book Review - Limbo

LimboLimbo by Dan Watters
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Another random choice, but it's been a while since I read a noir comic. This book certainly has the noir themes down pat, including the detective and his mysterious quarry. Thrown into the mix are some voodoo magic, mixtapes, scary TV sets and the detective's own problems and you've got a riveting read; for about half the book.

Halfway through, the story seems to completely lose the plot. People's motivations go back and forth - the ping pong match is a sure sign the writer didn't really know what to do with the characters. Bridgette, a character that could have been compelling, becomes a bouncing ball of motivations and detracts from the storyline.

SPOILERS
The astral plane stuff also didn't fit in with the first half of the book. I'm all for voodoo stuff and creepy characters, but all the bad guys turn out to be good guys under the thumb of unknown forces. Also, I don't like that the two female characters essentially have to be saved by male characters. So passè!
END

It's an enjoyable read and the art is great, it just doesn't live up to to its potential.
