Book Review: Kindred

KindredKindred by Octavia E. Butler
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

An engaging and unique concept. This unusual time travel tale intertwines the fantastic with racial politics. We follow our lead Dana as she constantly travels back and forth from her happy and content life in the 1970s to pre-Civil War Maryland. She soon realized that there is a significance to her having saved the life of a young boy, Rufus in this era. But her visits shed an uncomfortable light on the world as it was.

The book is hard hitting but easy to read. However, I feel the denouement needed a little more of a preamble.

A good and off-kilter read for sci-fi and historical fans.
