20 Years of Star Trek: Voyager - S01xE15

Ensign Lestat's TV Log, 04/07/15

Learning Curve
The Captain is back in her horrendous holo programme. She's introducing herself to the children. They're obnoxious little brats. The boy apparently grew up to play John Connor in 'The Sarah Connor Chronicles'.

The kids are annoying as hell. Seems like the daughter is seeing the ghost of her mother. And now the characters have disappeared.

There are power fluctuations on the ship. Tuvok has gone to investigate.

Looks like one of the Lieutenants, Lt. Dolby, was doing repairs without informing Engineering. He became really hostile when Tuvok reminded him that this is a Starfleet ship and he should follow regulations.

Now we have a scary situation on hand - a damaged gel pack. C suggests transferring some of the non-essential systems to conventional circuits.

This Dolby character is known to be aggressive and also has been in trouble before for his attitude.

Chakotay's got defensive as well about the Maquis crew.

There are several Maquis who are struggling. Cap is very understanding about how they would be unfamiliar with Starfleet rules. She suggests they're brought up to speed. A crash course in Starfleet operations. Poor Tuvok's been nominated, as he was an instructor at the Academy.

Tuvok is most displeased with this idea.

There are 4 Maquis selected for the course. They're upset at being chosen. Tuvok is being a hard taskmaster.

Physical training and academic studies are part of the course. We have a moody Bajoran as well.

Understandably the Maquis are insulted by this course, so Dolby is marching off with the rest of the team. They don't seem to care about Tuvok's rank.

The chosen 4 trainees are a little too sure of the fact that nothing will happen to them. Now they're complaining to Chakotay. They're so certain that he's going to side with them.

C just punched Dolby. Because, hey, that's the Maquis way.

Looks like C got his point across. They've all turned up for the course. And They're all in violation of the dress code. Too men are wearing jewellery, one lady has a head band.

Dolby doesn't ever stop complaining. Now B's got to put up with him. But she's made it into a challenge for him. We have more failing gel packs. What's going on?

B's taken the gel pack to Sickbay. Since she's found nothing mechanically wrong with it, she's hoping the Doc can find a medical solution.

Now, the Doctor is trying to be funny. It's not working. B'Elanna is not amused.

Looks like the packs have an infection.

Tuvok's got the trainees running through Jeffrey's Tubes. He's obviously super fit - but I'm feeling sorry for the team. They're going the long way to get to Deck 13.

The trainees look worse for wear. Tuvok hasn't broken a sweat. They are already hoping he dies soon.

Now he's making them run 10km. Somehow, they've made it. Heartless Tuvok increased the gravity on the deck. Poor Gerron and Chell still have 3 laps left. Dolby looks murderous.

Chell is cleaning the transporter room with a micro-resonator - it's going to take him 26.3 hours to finish this.

Now Tuvok's made a war game on the holodeck. Dolby is acting as captain. Tuvok looks impressed by Dolby's humanity.

There's a Romulan vessel attacking them. A second one just de-cloaked. The ship's being hit.

Tuvok's had to reset the programme, as they're all dead.

It never occurred to any of them to retreat. 'The strongest tactical move is highest gain at lowest cost'.

The team concur that they are not Starfleet material. Tuvok looks at his wits' end.

Pensive Tuvok is actually looking out the window. Neelix the Morale Officer has picked up on the fact that Tuvok is in a bad mood.

But Neelix knows what the issue is - Maquis trainees getting him down.

Tuvok doesn't catch on quick enough. Neelix suggests that he is rigid and inflexible, not the trainees.

Oh dear, the bacteria from the cheese that Neelix made has infected the gel packs.

B is being very supportive of Neelix, but looks quite accusingly at him as well.

Tuvok is now playing Pool with Dolby. He appears to be good at this. Tuvok is trying to establish a camaraderie with him. It's not working. Dolby has had a tough life.

Tuvok was hoping the programme would be positive for everyone. But that's not how Dolby and the others see it.

The spores from the cheese are quite virulent. The Doctor is at a loss. Kes seems to have come up with a possible solution.

Tuvok and his trainees are stuck inside a cargo bay.

Every system on the main grid is down. Even life support. Torres has to transfer all power to it to keep it going.

So the Doc has to simulate a fever in the gel packs. B'Elanna's come up with a way to heat the packs. Sounds rather risky.

All the conduits are getting hot inside the cargo bay. But now the trainees are stuck in a heated room.

The ship's so hot, Tom's about to pass out.

B's initiating the plasma burst, and some of the conduits have burst. Tuvok's sending the trainees through the Jeffrey's tube, while he rescues Geron. Of course, Dolby doesn't know that.

Doc is the only chipper person on the ship, everyone else is near collapsing.

Tuvok's really struggling to get Geron out. Everyone on the Bridge has almost passed out.

Looks like the three trainees have returned for Tuvok and Geron.

They're ok despite it all. Tuvok's heroic sacrifice has taught the trainees a valuable lesson. If he can bend the rules, they can follow them.

It's an odd episode to end the season, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that the network transferred many of the remaining season 1 episodes to season 2. Which is why season 1 is only 15 episodes long. Yet, it's a comprehensive start, with some brilliant concepts and character studies.

On to season 2.
