20 Years of Star Trek: Voyager - S01xE12

Ensign Lestat's TV Log, 04/07/15

Cathexis
The Captain is participating in a holo-novel. I remember this. It seems the most unlikely way to relax. Doesn't seem at all fun to me.

This Mrs. Templeton character is obnoxious and hostile. If the Captain was looking to enjoy herself, well, she certainly missed the mark.

To top it all, the house is big and creepy. Great, flying windows and eerie shadows.

So, essentially the Captain's character, Davenport, is to be the governess.

She's been interrupted by Harry. Looks like C and T were on an away team and someone's extracted the bio-neural energy from C. He's essentially brain dead.

An unidentified ship attacked the two of them when they were investigating a dark matter nebula. Tuvok was barely able to activate the auto-pilot before he collapsed.

Captain's taking the crew back to the nebula, so they can try and find a way to see what attacked them.

Just when Cap was studying the nebula, all sensors went off. Now the ship's come about, but Tom didn't do it. He looks shaken.

It's easy to forgot how brilliant a friend B'El is. She's performing a healing ritual that C once taught her. She's set up a medicine wheel in Sickbay.

Turns out the Doctor knows about the wheel, and gladly corrects B'Elanna's stone placement. While B has a lot of respect for C, there's so much more to their relationship than just that.

Something spooky is going on in Kes' apartment. Seems like someone is... watching her. Looks like her telepathic senses are continuing to grow.

Neelix is not happy with the thought that someone was in her room.

The ship's changed course again and this time Harry's been locked out of helm control.

Paris was apparently in the same location that the helm lockout originated. He doesn't remember anything, so he's been sent to the Sickbay.

While nothing seems wrong with him, forensic scans suggest Tom was there.

On the Bridge, Tuvok believes he's found the ion trail of the ship that attacked them. Wait, now there's an energy drain on the ship. Warp core has been shut down. Comms are down.

In Engineering, B'El has no clue what they're talking about. But she was just at the console shutting down the core.

The Doctor has found something. Looks like a different memory engram shows up in the brains of both Tom and B when they tampered with the ship.

So far, the hypothesis is that an alien intruder entered their minds. This is very disturbing. It seems like the alien is preventing them from going back to the nebula.

It looks like the alien can only affect organic beings. The Doctor looks to be the only trustworthy crewmember.

Captain is transferring all command codes to the Doctor. This means he can countermand any of their orders if he's unsure of them.

Kes and Tuvok are now going to work together to hone her skills. But look, Tuvok and Kes have been attacked. Kes is now in a coma. Tuvok seems ok.

Tom suggests using a magneton scan. B'El suggests they configure a flash scan, so that the entire ship can be scanned at once.

Harry is immobile. Immediately the entire staff are about to shoot him. He was just lost in thought. Talk about a disturvbing turn of events. Can no one be trusr

Neelix is terribly paranoid. He's seeing alien behaviour everywhere.

Tuvok's just wandered into Sickbay. From the looks of it, Kes' injuries are not the same as Chakotay's. She was physically assaulted.

When T bring's this news to the Captain, she immediately jumps to the conclusion that he wasn't assaulted, and hence he may have inflicted it.

Now the EMH has been deactivated. The command codes are the reason for this attack. It's gone back to the Captain.

The Captain recommends dividing the command protocols between her and Tuvok.

Wait, she just attacked Tyvok.

Tom stunned her.

Now it's in Harry.

Tom gets him.

Now in the other Lt.

Tuvok flash phasers the whole lot of them.

Jeez. Tense. Captain's okay now. But the Doc is going to be hard to get back.

Paris is the temporary medic.

B'El's been investigating the shuttle. Someone erased the logs on the shuttle and then disrupted it. Back-up logs show no other ship. Cap and B both believe Tuvok may have been under the alien's influence, hence him lying about the attack.

Now Tom is suggesting Kes was assaulted by a Vulcan nerve pinch. It seems strange that the alien keeps attacking T. Why?

Tuvok's suggesting Cap's suffering paranoia. This alien ship's ion trail is also a figment of Tuvok's imagination.

Great. Now he's suggesting the Captain's been possessed. Does Harry trust T or Cap?

He's with the Captain. But Tuvok has them hostage. They're entering the nebula.

There appear to be some life-forms heading to the ship. They've taken over Tuvok, hence his behaviour.

Now someone's possessed B'El. She's ejected the core.

Seems like there are two aliens - one in Tuvok, one floating about.

Wait, B can't authorise the warp core ejection. The command code used is that of Chakotay's. Seems like C has been floating about trying to keep the ship away from the nebula.

So the collective neural energy of the crew is what the aliens are looking for.

Flashing probe lights knock Tuvok out. Looks like the alien's left his body.

Kim has to try and relocate Tuvok's route through the nebula.

Wait, C's energy just took over Neelix, and he just rearranged the stones on Chakotay's medicine wheel.

Looks like C has made the wheel into a map. They're following the new route.

The aliens are attempting to breach, but Voyager's cleared the nebula.

They're home free, finally.

Oh yay! Chakotay's awake.

The Doctor is so proud of his hard work in re-instating C's consciousness, but B and J don't seem to care much.

Chakotay was able to take over people's bodies and slowly learned to work them in more a complex fashion. Thank goodness for that, or else the crew would have been lost for good.

Well, what an episode. Tense, atmospheric, quite frightening at times. It is up there with some of the best. I'll still never understand how the alien knew how to use Tuvok's codes or systems, but we'll suspend our beliefs for the sake of a fun episode. Not being able to trust one on another is a scary prospect aboard a ship that is all alone. There's a brilliance to the fact that the entire episode is set onboard, but it never feels claustrophobic.

It's not easy to get of this high. But next up is a spectacular character study.
