20 Years of Star Trek: Voyager - S01xE08

Emanations

I don't think I've ever voluntarily re-watched this episode, which is an unfortunate recurring theme with most Harry Kim episodes. Nothing personal, mate.

So we start with something quite exciting. There's a chance Voyager has discovered a brand new element. It promises to make life seriously easy for the ship.

The asteroid system holds M-class planets so we have an away team of B, C and Kim.

The planet's full of cobweb-like things.

Great, the away team just found a mummified humanoid. He's dead at the very least.

Oh goodness, there's a cave full of them. It's like some kind of graveyard.

Harry looks downright upset, which is what usually happens to him when something they're expecting doesn't go their way.

We're taking inventory of this burial site. The new element they thought they discovered is emanating from the decomposing bodies.

We have a conflict of morals - sanctity of the bodies should be respected, says Chakotay. Harry recommends an anthropological study. Cap goes with Chakotay, of course.

I love that C supports Harry.

B'El is properly disgusted. C reminds me of my Dad, he's always probing for more info, and wants you to deduce as much as you can and be observant.

B'El is one of the most pragmatic people you can come across. - a Klingon burial has no fanfare. The bodies are disposed off in a convenient manner, this despite Klingons believing in an after-life.

There is now a dimensional vacule. Seska is trying to transport the team. Only C and B got transported, along with one of the dead bodies. Harry's disappeared.

B'El's suggesting reviving the alien body. Chakotay is displeased with the thought. It is very important to him to honour the dead's wishes. C's high moral values are a recurring occurrence on the show.

We are with some aliens, sermonising over a dead or dying person. They're around a sarcophagus.

Oh dear, Harry's appeared in the sarcophagus.

There are two aliens bidding farewell to each other. Looks like these Emanations are the dying ritual of these people.

Don't think the dying man looks too happy. His wife referred to it as a brave sacrifice.

Harry's come in from the 'next Emanation'. Not sure yet what all this means. H has a distinctive tell when he's disoriented, he presses his temples.

There's a doctor who's supposed to study Harry, but he looks terrified.

The aliens are really upset about the thought that H saw some dead people on the planet.

These are the Vanari. They are not from the planet the away team were on. The doctor suggests that H has come from another dimension; the after-life.

On the ship. We've got a Vanari in Sickbay. The bio-polymer resin the bodies were found in, is actually secreted by the bodies.

The cobwebs on the planets, were the decomposed dead bodies. "You were strolling through dead bodies", Doc says to Chakotay. Gross, Doc.

These camera angles suggest how scary the crew must look to the Vanari patient.

The Vanari is having a meltdown. She's assuming she's in the after-life, but it's Voy instead.

Ah, Kim got swapped with the Vanari woman. She got transported to Voyager, he got caught up in the synataph (sarcophagus).

The doctor's faith is shaken by the knowledge that there were dead bodies found on a planet. H is trying to institute First Contact procedures, and not give away too much information.

Doesn't look like the aliens are going to let H go. They want to do a bio-scan.

So, every two hours the vacules open.

The Vanari woman is awake again. She's calm but in terrible shock. So the pods send the dead bodies to the planet. But the aliens have a belief that they are supposed to evolve into a higher consciousness and find all their answers.

Ptera is not pleased at the thought of spending life on Voyager. Dude, you could be on worse ships.

Brilliant, now subspace vacules are opening up inside the ship.

Hatil, the Vanari getting ready to die, is now having second thoughts about the ritual. He's not sure if their after-life believes hold any more.

Hatil's conversation with Harry is shaking him to the core. But H can always turn things around. He's making Hatil feel better by saying that he may have just seen the corporeal remains of the Vanari.

The arguments about after-life continue.

Hatil was in an accident and his life hasn't been easy since. His family has decided it would be better for Hatil to move on to the next Emanation.

H looks appalled. He's not trying to judge, but his distaste has seeped through.

Hatil is terrified of dying, and it's got worse since his talks with H.

We now have 3 bodies appearing on the ship. They emanate a neural energy that passes through the hull and into the asteroid belt.

The vacules may be attracted to the warp core, as they've all formed within 20 metres of it.

Voyager has left the system, temporarily.

Ptera is talking to Kes. And they're having a heart to heart about the after-life. It's a crisis for Ptera. The after-life is just another plane of living for them, but Ptera now knows different.

B'El suggests recreating the transporter accident, there's a chance of Ptera going home, and bringing H back.

We have temporary protection for the warp core, and the experiment has begun. Unfortunately the vacule closed up while they were transporting Ptera. Seska's attempt to recover her transporter pattern have failed. Ptera is dead and transported to the asteroid.

The Vanari doctor wants to take H to a secure location because there's a real danger to him.

Hatil is wrapping himself up in a ceremonial shroud. H still looks disgusted. Hatil really wants to run away, but the thoughts of his family comes first.

Harry is now suggesting they swap places. Hatil runs away to his friends in the mountain, while Harry goes to the death pod (yes, I had to call it that).

H has a lot of faith that the Doc will be able to revive him. But hell, he's willing to risk death to get out of this hell hole.

Hatil is now going to help Harry with the shroud.

I will never understand how Harry saw through that shroud. I'm sure there was a long goodbye. Not sure how he faked that.

Harry looks right panicked inside the pod.

So they kill them first, through some painful looking death sticks.

On the ship, another body has been found. B'El recommends leaving, because the warp core protection is failing.

Just when they're about to leave, Harry's body arrives.

He's almost dead, but nope, the Doctor's good work means Kim is alive. He looks really pleased to be back.

Pensive Kim in the Mess Hall. The Captain always seems to know when a crewman needs her.

She's put Kim off duty for 2 more days, so that he can reflect on what just happened to him. She doesn't want him to become jaded. Beautiful pep talk by her. She's a Captain and a mentor.

I think H is really feeling down about how disappointing the Vanari's after-life beliefs are. But looks like the neural energy they emanate at death could be a form of evolution.

A fabulously hopeful end to an episode that deals with that nagging worry in all our minds - death.

Onwards, ho!
