20 Years of Star Trek: Voyager - S01xE04

Ensign Lestat's TV Log, 04/07/15

Phage
For obvious reasons, I've avoided re-watching this episode for a while. But in the name of journalism, I shall dive back in.

They're on their way to a rogue planet. This sounds like a bad idea.

Their search for dilithium is a huge part of the show.

The poor crew, living on food rations.

Poor Captain. What has Neelix done to her dining room?

Neelix is really enterprising. He's started a Mess Hall for the crew.

Oh dear, he didn't ask anyone for approval.

I like that Ensign Parsons, who's been asked to cover the kitchen for Neelix, is a male.

Hmmm... Neelix seems a little too excited about the dilithium concentrate on the planet.

We've got an away team ready to move. Oh dear, Neelix is joining in.

I love how the Captain is quite indulging from time to time.

On the planet. Splitting up is never, ever a good idea. Now Neelix is on his own.

Whoa. The rock surface just dissipated to reveal a shadowy figure.

They're picking up dilithium signatures but no dilithium.

Looks like Neelix has discovered a cavern.

Please listen to Chakotay, N.

No, there's no dilithium.

Now he's getting organic signatures on his tricorder. N, go back to the rest of the away team.

Oh no, that shadowy dude appeared again. He just shot Neelix.

Chakotay, do something.

C and H just found N. He's going into shock.

On the ship. N is going into a coma. His lungs have been removed.

Looks like the attackers removed his lungs using some kind of transporter.

I like how Tom is already helping out in the Sickbay.

Telaxians have a complicated system attached to the lungs. Doc can't get him a replicated one.

On the planet. Captain's here.

They've found some warm rocks. We're going in.

Looks like they're through the forcefield.

The Doc looks so frustrated with Tom's medical abilities.

Doc talks to himself. Probably a quality adapted from his maker.

Whoa, Doc is making Neelix a pair of holographic lungs.

'But a hologram is just a projection of light held in a magnetic field. There's no matter involved,' says Tom.

Ouch, Doc just slapped Tom.There has got to be better way to demonstrate your theory than that. Doc is just mean.

Seems like the holo-lungs idea is daunting. Kes looks really worried. It does sound grim, Tom.

'What do you think Neelix would want?' asks Tom. Kes doesn't know, but she wants him to live. They're going through with the procedure.

The away team are in a medical room. It's run on dilithium, but there are no dilithium deposits.

Whoa, there's a lot of organs around.

They're following a life sign.

Tuvok shot him. But he escaped. He dropped his weapon.

An alien ship just appeared and went into warp.

On the ship. They're making the holo-lungs. They've put a restraint on N.

Looks like N is breathing again.

Voyager is following the alien ship.

N is awake now.

Neelix is already looking depressed at the thought of being stuck in the restraint.

Haha. Way to defuse the tension. 'Your ceiling is hideous.'

'I'm a Doctor, Mr. Neelix, not a decorator.'

Tom's being supportive.

Ooh. N is jealous of Paris. 'He's just one big walking hormone walking around the ship.'

Kes' response is great. She's not putting up with this jealousy nonsense.

N is being so morbid. Kes is so optimistic.

Doc has put visiting hours on this.

'I'll try to contain my disappointment.' Now we know where 'Captain America: The First Avenger' got its idea from.

The alien weapon is very advanced. It has entered an asteroid. That asteroid is man-made (or alien-made). There's a crater.

Tuvok knows J so well, he's already guessed she's planning on taking the ship inside the crater.

A close-up of Tom. So pretty.

Intense look from the Captain.

We're in the crater. This is so 'Empire Strikes Back'.

Can't find the alien ship though.

Kes has really done up the Sickbay for N.

Poor N is all alone.

'A projection with a lot of work to do.' Doc really is funny.

This is an interesting allegory about making choices for patients. N is suffering an existential crisis. He can't bare to think of living in this fashion for the rest of his life.

Neelix, calm down. Oh dear. He's hyperventilating.

Doc could only do the one thing. Sedate him.

I think the Doc is really disturbed by this turn of events.

The ship just went into an asteroid chamber.

They're seeing reflections of Voyager and the alien ship.

Captain Janeway takes a lot of chances. She's urging Tom to follow the ion trail, though they may just collide into a wall.

Poor Kes, now she's stuck in Sickbay.

She's good at picking up on people's emotions.

Poor Doc, he's really drowning. He's a supplement, not a permanent solution.

Kes is so encouraging.

Seska is here in Engineering.

Now the ship is losing power.

There's a dampening field in this chamber.

Now Tuvok, Chakotay and Janeway are firing a beam to find the real ship. Well, good thinking.

We've just beamed aboard the aliens.

Oh goodness, the transporter Ensign is physically backing away from them.

They're horribly disfigured.

They're Vidians. Suffering from the Phage.

They harvest the bodies of other beings to rectify the same tissue.

I do like the way the Captain gets chocked up as she tells them to give back the lungs.

Damn. One of these dudes is using Neelix' lungs.

The Captain's in a quandary. Kill the Vidian or let N die.

The Vidians were an extraordinary, cultured people, but now their sole intent is to survive.

The Captain and her morals - they're very important to her.

She's taking out her frustration of the past few weeks on the Vidians.

She has no option but to let them go.

But wait, she's threatening them with deadly force if they dare attack Voyager again.

The Vidian with Neelix' lungs is suggesting they may be able to help Neelix. He's a much nicer person than the other guy.

I like how the other Vidian is properly struggling to breathe. Shows that the Phage is debilitating.

Now he's scanning the crew.

He's obviously not met a hologram before. His readings show the Doc is not here.

The Vidian is suggesting a transplant. Looks like they have a way to make it compatible.

Kes has volunteered. She's so sweet. She wants to do something for Neelix, because he's done so much for her.

Wow, the kitchen is now Neelix's.

'I'll see you at breakfast.' We will Neelix.

Kes and Neelix are recovering.

Looks like Kes will have to get used to diminished lung capacity. So scuba diving may be out of the question for these two.

The Doc is really keen on her joining him in Sickbay. He's going to begin her lessons in medicine as well.

Sweet moment between the Doc and Kes. They're both thanking each other for expanding their outlooks.

The Vidians maybe distressing to look at, but the story and their circumstance feels real. Any community ravaged by war, disease or anything of the sort, will go on the moral rollercoaster they've been on. The Captain's decision not to persecute them was ideal. I think that if this was in TOS, Kirk would not have been so accommodating or understanding. Janeway has always been high on the moral compass. That's the best thing about her. And this episode establishes that fact.

What have we got next?
