20 Years of Star Trek: Voyager - S01xE03

Ensign Lestat's TV Log, 04/07/15

Time and Again
I love this episode and have seen it way too many times. I like the fact that Voyager starts off with several interesting concepts. And that they try and explore emotions and the heart of this crew.

Tom's being Tom. He's trying to convince Harry to join him on a date with the Delaney sisters.

'I plan on seeing mine again,' Harry's so committed to his girlfriend. It's only a few weeks since they got lost in the Delta quadrant, so he's still holding out hope.

Why do the Delaney sisters come as a pair?

Trust Tom to lie about Harry's 'record'. Does Harry even know how to fly?

A shockwave!

Kes, what's up? She looks worried.

A massive detonation wiped out the planet.

Neelix, you're fooling no one. He's fibbed his stay onboard. I'm pretty sure he knows nothing about the Delta Quadrant.

Kes is on the bridge. They've found an M-class planet.

No life signs. Okay, we've got an away team.

I like the perfunctory look Captain gives Kes on her way out.

We're on the planet. It sure looks like its been through a lot.

The entire surface of the planet has been seared. Everything organic just evaporated.

Wow, a civilization running on polaric energy. On a running time bomb.

Kes is crying. It's actually really annoying. Since I started watching the show when Seven was already on board, and Kes was gone, she always was my least favourite character. She didn't have Seven's strength or smarts. There's a lot to admire about her character, but not as much as Seven's. But we'll get to that eventually.

Relaying more of Kes' background. Ancestors with telepathic abilities. She's picked up the residual patterns of brainwaves.

Wow! What was that? Seems like Tom just stepped in somewhere else. It's a full on living world.

I don't understand either, Tom. Lots of people around.

The chain reaction has shattered subspace. Oh no! Now the Captain's with Tom in the new world.

Screaming kid. So, annoying!

Captain really knows how to save a situation.

Seems like a nicely built up world. More lilting speech patterns. The crew have already gotten out of speaking in that fashion, but we'll see that a lot of guest stars continue to talk in that 90s style.

The Captain looks right impressed by Tom's improvising skills.

Oof, Tom, you beauty.

Good idea asking the shop keeper how the time-piece works. Now they can figure out when the explosion happens.

What did you say, Tom? Didn't hear you over those big eyes of yours.

They've got less than 24 hours before the explosion.

Back on the ship. So Tom and Cap are lost in a subspace fracture.

These shockwaves have sent them into the past.

Harry and B'Elanna have to find a way to widen the fracture and bring them back.

Haha. Doc to Kes, 'Your brain is not on file.'

Poor Doc. No one tells him anything - he's unaware that the Maquis have joined the ship. 'Another crew!' Picardo really portrays the Doc's irritation brilliantly.

'The voyage of the damned!' Doc you're so right.

He's doing such a bad job of making Kes feel better.

Back on the planet. Captain looks lovely in these local outfits.

The Prime Directive strikes! They can't help these people. The explosion has to happen.

Can't say the outfit does justice to Tom.

'You're not to warn these people, That's an order.' And Tom listens, that's what I love about this show. There's a lot of respect for the Captain, because that's the post she holds, and the kind of person she is.

That annoying local kid is back.

Stop spying on people you creepy kid.

Hahahahah! That's pretty much the way I would react to the kid as well, Tom. Scare 'em away.

Now they want to use polaric energy to go back?

Whoa, a riot. Again, such an apt representation of humanity, squabbling over useless things.

Poor Captain, she's been hit. Stupid guard.

Back on the ship. Seems like B and H have come up with a way to bring back our missing crewmembers.

The away team is going to wear anti-polaric bands to prevent getting caught like Captain and Tom.

Poor J, looks badly hit.

Oh dear, now they're being interrogated by the protesters. Looks like they've got the wrong impression of Tom and Cap.

How can they tell them the truth? There really has been a disaster on your planet.

Kes is with the away team. Seems like her telepathic abilities are stronger than she realises.

Uh oh, subspace fractures are dissipating.

The five senior leaders on the ship are part of the away mission. So, who's in charge of the ship?

Now that kid has been captured by the protesters as well.

Looks like the away team is in the same room as J and Tom.

Oh shut up, kid. You're making matters worse.

Oh no! The comm badges have been found by the away team, but they've been destroyed in the explosion.

Tuvok is still being optimistic. Not much hope though.

Kes is looking at the badges.

Oh dear, these protesters are too clever.

Now Tom is talking to the kid. He's feeling sorry for him because of the tomorrow the kid will never see.

The protesters are against using polaric energy. Frankly, from the looks of the eventual outcome, we all agree.

Oh dear, Captain and Tom being here has pre-poned the protesters' attack plan on the energy factory.

Wait, Captain, what are you doing? Why are you telling them everything?

Kes can feel their presence? So weird.

They're trying to open up the subspace fractures now.

Cap, the dude is not believing you.

Ok the generator is on.

Right, the protesters are not listening to Cap.

Whoa. It's worked, somewhat. Chakotay's message just came through. Now the bads have taken the comm badges.

The badges got left behind. The baddies took J and Tom.

They've violated the Prime Directive by being here and forced a change in the protesters' plans.

Seems like J and Tom are responsible for the outcome, even though it happened before they arrived. Time travel episodes are so weird.

Harry looks very concerned.

Chakotay, of course you would try and prevent the disaster, that's so you.

Tuvok is such a logical person. It's not about you, it's about what the Captain would have done.

Okay, the bads are threatening the boy.

Wait, what? Captain just told the guards they're hostages.

Oh no! Tom's been shot. Trying to save that kid, this is why we'll never see Quicksilver again (sorry, couldn't resist inserting a Marvel reference here. Go here for an explanation.)

Tom seems to have become really attached to the kid.

The protesters are tampering with the energy machinery.

J's sneaking up behind them. Be careful, Captain.

Away team is back. Seems like they've not only found the flashpoint, but it also seems to be the same place J is in.

I like the fact that Tom got shot, and Janeway's in charge of trying to save the day (at least in the past storyline).

Wait, despite all evidence pointing to the contrary, Kes feels the death of the Captain in this area.

Wait, if they're not planning on blowing anything up, what happens here?

'All right then, we'll wait.' Actually, that's a really good plan, Captain.

You know what I love about Tuvok? He's not an out and out naysayer. He doesn't think there's any logical reasoning behind their plans, but if he doesn't have an alternative, he'll point out his opinion then follow through with your plan. More people should be like him. If you've got nothing to offer, then do as I say.

Oh no! They're cutting through subspace. The away team's rescue attempt is what causes the explosion.

J's firing at the fracture.

Everyone's been hit!

Everyone's disappearing!

Back on Voyager. Tom is again trying to convince Harry to come with him on the double date. Ship's not been hit this time.

There's an M-class planet they've come by.

Kes is on the bridge again. She's talking about people being killed and about the explosion.

Seems like the M-class planet is a healthy pre-Warp civilization. So, they can't go and investigate it.

Kes isn't backing down, though. She wants to be convinced.

On the viewscreen, it looks like a lively planet. Kes is never going to trust her telepathic abilities again.

Looks like Harry's going on that double date now.

I've always loved this episode. And especially the fact that sometimes, when you're so hell bent on doing what's right, you ending up messing things up even more. This is an important theme throughout the series.

Thankfully, in the end, they unwittingly save the day, and that's what this crew is best at - saving people.

There's something really special about Tom and Captain Janeway's relationship. They're very comfortable with each other, and though they don't always see eye to eye on things, they're logical and pragmatic about giving the upper hand to the person who's right.

When I first saw this episode, I couldn't believe the chemistry between the two characters. It really sizzled. There's a lot of reasons nothing much could be taken forward with their chemistry, but we'll touch on that eventually during another episode.

Now, for a rather disturbing episode.
