Book Review - Twelve Red Herrings

Twelve Red Herrings by Jeffrey Archer My rating: 3 of 5 stars I bought this one a couple of years ago, when the author was in town. I quite enjoyed this book, but expected more of a connection between all the tales than was present. Only one character is repeated in two stories, all the others are disparate. The central conceit for all of them is the 'red herring' and some of the stories are more obvious than others in their deception and cleverness. "Trial and Error" Undoubtedly the best of the lot; it's a pity it was placed in the beginning of the book, as it heightens expectations exponentially. The entire premise is drastic, yet never veers towards the ridiculous. The story engages all the feelings of hope, love, betrayal and anger. It's like a condensed version of a Hollywood film, which worked for me. It's written at a measured pace, except for the ending. Avengers: Age of Ultron and the Art of Disappointment

Ensign Lestat's Film Log, 10/05/2015 May 1 was marked in my calendar as 'Avengers Day' because on this fateful day ' Avengers: Age of Ultron ' would finally arrive. After a year dodging spoilers (unsuccessfully for the most part), I was very excited for this film. But anxious all the same - I love films, they're my favourite entertainment. The press tour had already been wrought with problems. The reviews from the premiere were positive, but restrained. Didn't help that I was concerned about the new entrants. AoU opens with a giant action set-piece. The camera weaves through the action, from one Avenger to another. We're in a fictional Eastern European town and the Avengers are up against some big bads with tanks and guns. You are explicitly reminded of these guys' powers and abilities, as well as introduced to two brand new characters - Scarlet Witch ( Elizabeth Olsen ) and Quicksilver ( Aaron Taylor-Johnson ). Snow White and the Huntsman - A Confused Re-Imagining

Ensign Lestat's Film Log, 18/06/2012 Hollywood has off-late taken it upon itself to re-imagine and update many classic tales. Tim Burton 's ' Alice in Wonderland ' featured a teenaged Alice, getting set for battle. Even ' The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian ' updated its original text to make best use of the age of the actors. Unfortunately for that film its marketing campaign and predecessor invited children to watch the film, only for them to be traumatised by the goings-on. This year we've had two Snow White adaptations. My thoughts on ' Mirror Mirror ' are evident in my review of it here . That film was light fare, it didn't take itself seriously at all, and I think that the campiness of that film just rubbed me the wrong way.
